Though women have a better capacity to know there is something wrong with their bodies during an illness…their symptoms and physical signs could be more vague and less detailed than men when it comes to heart disease.

Here is a list of such symptoms in women:

1. Some discomfort or pressure in the back, arm or chest

2. Tingling in the hand, elbow or jaw

3. Sudden profound fatigue

4. Sudden profound dizziness or shortness of breath

5. Vertigo or dizziness

6. Indigestion

7. Strangling sensation in the throat

None of the above symptoms should be taken lightly.

Statin usage is quite common in male and female patients. However, there are untoward side effects (myalgias and muscle disorders) seen. More dangerous is their association with diabetes, breast cancer, and coronary artery calcification.

In fact, a study in 2010 provided evidence of increased risk of coronary artery disease in women.

Statins have been shown to decrease zinc, vitamin D, magnesium, vitamin K2, vitamin C, CoQ10, and selenium containing proteins. This can lead to undesirable effects in female patients.

Additionally, one must understand that in the female anatomy, coronary arteries are smaller than their male counterparts. Thus, the arteries may be more difficult to stent. This can lead to increased morbidity and mortality.

When talking with your healthcare provider, you should be aware of all of the aforementioned issues.
